Founded in 1742 by English settlers Suffolk grew into a port city on the Nansemond River. Suffolk was a transportation center with the river along with both the Petersburg and Norfolk Railroads. The city is also the original home of the Planters Peanuts company that began its life in 1912. Suffolk remains today a major peanut-processing center. Dispatchers received a call just after 10:30 p.m Tuesday night about a house being on fire in the 5900 block of Bennetts Creek Lane. First units arrived on scene at 10:40 p.m and found heavy fire showing from the roof of a two-story home.

Suffolk Police say several suspects broke into vehicles on three different days and used the stolen credit cards in local stores.
