Founded in 1742 by English settlers Suffolk grew into a port city on the Nansemond River. Suffolk was a transportation center with the river along with both the Petersburg and Norfolk Railroads. The city is also the original home of the Planters Peanuts company that began its life in 1912. Suffolk remains today a major peanut-processing center. Blue Bell Ice Cream announced Wednesday they are planning to construct a 14,000-square-foot distribution facility in the Northgate Commerce Park this year. Suffolk Fire and Rescue officials say a citizen alerted emergency dispatchers about the fire around 6:45 p.m. when they spotted smoke in the 4800 block of Nansemond Parkway.

A citizen alerted dispatchers to smoke in the area of 4800 Nansemond Parkway around 6:42 p.m., and the first unit arrived at the scene minutes later. Upon arrival, firefighters found several large piles - containing tires, creosote timbers and general debris - in close proximity to one another that were on fire.

Man sentenced after Suffolk small plane crash

A man who admitted he didn't have a pilot's license after crashing a plane in Suffolk has been sentenced to 14 days in jail. Robert Gray Jr. crashed his 1972 Piper Aircraft in a field near the intersection of Cherrygrove Road and Greenway Road in July 2017.

College student pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in texting and driving case

A Suffolk man charged in connection to a crash that killed one man and injured another in April pleaded guilty to two charges in front of a Suffolk judge Thursday. Camren Lamar Artis, 19, pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and texting while operating a vehicle.
