Founded in 1742 by English settlers Suffolk grew into a port city on the Nansemond River. Suffolk was a transportation center with the river along with both the Petersburg and Norfolk Railroads. The city is also the original home of the Planters Peanuts company that began its life in 1912. Suffolk remains today a major peanut-processing center. Today attractions include The Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge, five gold courses, The Suffolk Peanut Festival, and the annual Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow Wow.
